When Danielle and Chris started to plan their wedding weekend, they wanted to find venues that represented different aspects of their lives and captured who they are and what they love. They found the ideal blend in Newport, Rhode Island. After selecting a tranquil vineyard for the rehearsal dinner, Danielle and Chris opted to have the ceremony and reception at a romantic oceanside resort. Once they secured the locations, Danielle and Chris focused on including nostalgic personal touches in their ceremony and reception, and planning fun activities for family and friends.

From the bride…

We decided to have our rehearsal dinner at a vineyard in a quiet, neighboring town, away from the hustle of downtown Newport. It was perfect! For cocktail hour, we had wine barrel tables set up outside by the vines, as well as inside the rustic tasting barn where our close family and friends mingled to live jazz music accompanied by great wine and champagne. We had dinner outside on the tented patio, overlooking the vineyard before the trolleys took everyone back into town for some dancing. There was no better way to kick off the weekend!

For our wedding venue, I knew I wanted to be by the water but with a hint of formality. When I found Belle Mer, an open white venue with ocean views and crystal chandeliers, I knew I had found the perfect place!  I wanted to keep the décor simple with the white palate of the venue, so we infused light pinks and greys throughout, making it soft and romantic. Cupcake Vineyards’  elegant labels and delicious varietals embodied the look and feel I was going for, making it the perfect wine to serve at our reception.

It was important to us that we incorporate little touches that personalized the night. For my bouquet, I took a patch of lace from my mother’s wedding dress to wrap my flowers with. Instead of having an escort card table, my aunt created a seating chart on an easel. She’s a great painter and calligrapher so she painted the Newport Bridge in the backdrop (which was the view from our ceremony at Belle Mer). We also had a cigar roller set up during the reception, rolling handmade cigars with custom made labels and matches so guests could enjoy them outside by the fire-pit and ocean view.

At the end of the night, we took trolleys back to the hotel where we continued the festivities outside with close friends and one last Cupcake Prosecco toast. We couldn’t have asked for a better night!

We have some exciting news! Yes, we’re announcing the winner of our first-ever Cupcake Vineyards® Love Deliciously Dream Wedding contest.

You remember it, don’t you? The contest where engaged couples entered their dream wedding details on Pinterest for a chance to win complete wedding coordination by expert wedding planner and author, Alison Hotchkiss; wedding day photography by celebrity photographer, Elizabeth Messina; and $5,000 toward wedding expenses — a prize package worth over $65,000.

Our Love Deliciously Dream Wedding contest winners are Valeria Melo and Lee Waters of Orlando, Florida!

Hundreds of engaged couples pinned their dream wedding details on Pinterest, but Valeria and Lee’s board far exceeded the contest judging criteria.

How did Valeria and Lee react? Read on to find out a little about our lucky contest winners!

What was your reaction when you found out you’d won the contest?

Valeria: I was running and twirling, dancing with the dog. Lee hopped up on a chair. We were so surprised. I’ve never won anything in my life. I would never even play bingo as a kid because I never won, but I love Cupcake wines, so I figured I would enter the contest for fun. When this happened, I was just in shock. Surprised, grateful, feeling very blessed.

Tell us your reaction to the Dream Wedding prize — Alison Hotchkiss planning your wedding, Elizabeth Messina’s photography and the $5,000?

Lee on Wedding Planning: We weren’t considering it for budget reasons, but when we had our engagement party in April, I found out how important a planner would be. Val was busy doing her hair, and I had to set up. I was completely stressed out!

Valeria on Photography: Elizabeth’s style of photography is spot on with our style. We are so excited for her to capture those special moments that happen in a split second.

Valeria & Lee on the Cash Prize: The $5,000 is huge, especially considering our original budget was $10,000. This will allow us to accommodate our ever-growing list of guests!

Tell us the story of your engagement?

Lee: I’ll start by saying, we love our little apartment. Val and I spent a lot of time finding the perfect items to decorate the interior, and we had some big plans for the backyard as well. Since we love our home so much, I figured why not ask her to marry me there. Better yet, why not in our backyard.

It was December 23rd. I needed Val to be out of the house for a while, so I asked her sister to take her shopping for the day. My mission was to transform our backyard while she was gone, so I bought string lights, a fire pit, fire wood, a bench, 100 LED candles, wire, and mason jars. The fire pit was in the center with the bench next to it between 2 trees. Mason jars with candles in them hung on twine strung from tree to tree. Then I zig-zagged string lights over the set up.

I told Val I had a surprise for her. I walked her outside to the 100 candles lighting up our cozy little backyard. Her first reaction was priceless: “I WANTED TO BE A PART OF THIS!” She was actually sad that she wasn’t involved picking out the bench and fire pit! I think I said something along the lines of “Shut up and enjoy it!”. We laughed, and she took a seat on the bench. I didn’t want her to think I was going to propose, so I gave her a Christmas present. She relaxed, so we started the fire, listened to music, brought out blankets and pillows and our dog Harriet, then we snuggled together in the cold night warming by the fire.

Then, I told Val how happy I am, and the journey our relationship has gone through. There were a bunch of laughs and smiles from the stories. Then I kissed her, and while kissing her I slid off the bench onto one knee and put the box in her hand. She was confused at first wondering why I was falling off the bench. When she opened her eyes and saw me on one knee she smiled from ear to ear and immediately started tearing up, which made me choke up, but I was able to say, “Val, will you marry me?” We both had tears rolling down our face and hugged each other. It was perfect.

What is your favorite Cupcake wine?

Valeria & Lee: We love Cupcake Riesling and Cupcake Red Velvet. We can’t wait to serve Cupcake at our wedding.

Stay tuned as we follow Val and Lee through all of the exciting wedding planning!
